Saints’ revival proves short-lived

RUGBY:

OLDHAM St Annes’ mid-season loss of form continued with a 44-12 defeat at Askam in NCL Division Two.

The Cumbrians took control of the game in the opening quarter with right wing Andy Young grabbing two tries either side of one from Tom Holmes.

Fortunately for Saints, Kristian Tyson failed the conversions.

Saints young forwards Tom Hurdus and Danny Hurley played well but were unable to stem the tide.

Immediately after the break, Saints staged a mini-revival when substitute Michael Cadd brushed aside the Askam defence to send Kiel Lancashire in at the back of the posts for a six-pointer.

Then Craig Highton – operating at stand-off – floated a high ball to the corner flag for Russell Cawdron to leap up and score his first try for the senior side. Lancashire converted.

The comeback was short-lived, as St Anne’s conceded a penalty on their line. Askam second-row forward Tom Hopkins crashed over.

Mark Tyson put the game out of Saints’ reach, hacking the ball forward to win the race to the line.
