CROMPTON and Royton ‘A’ have emerged as the early pacesetters in the Oldham Golf League’s East Division.

Andy Bottomley’s side produced a fine 7-1 win at Saddleworth to give them an impressive 11 points from their two away games. Victory enabled them to leapfrog Stamford, who were held at home by Blackley.

Fairfield ‘A’ golfer Dan Heathcote holed in one as part of a remarkable comeback in their match with Werneth.

Two down with six to play, Dan and partner Martin Leah went birdie, birdie, eagle (hole in one), birdie on their way to a one-hole success which sealed a 6-2 home win. Dan holed his wedge shot at the 133-yard 15th.

Brookdale and Denton share top spot in the West Division after the former edged it 5-3 in their meeting at Woodhouses.

And Ashton salvaged a 4-4 draw at Oldham by gaining halves from five down and two down with three to play.

In the ‘B’ Section East, Crompton and Royton had to fight hard for a 5-3 home victory over dogged Saddleworth, while it is Blackley who top the table.

‘B’ West could prove the tightest division of the lot this season and Brookdale captain Paul Cain will have been delighted at a 6-2 win on their travels to Denton to keep them up with the pace.

STEPHEN Davis produced a gross 74, nett 68, to win Division One of Crompton and Royton’s Three Division medal.

The six-handicapper’s return was two shots better than that of Mark Willmore, who shot 80-10-70 for the runner-up spot.
