SHADLEY van Schalkwyk was here, there and everywhere in Heyside’s 175-run thumping of Greenfield in the last eight of the Tanner Cup at Ladhill Lane.
The South African professional swatted 10 sixes and 17 fours in a chanceless knock of 158. Then he bowled three wickets and held a couple of catches - and for good measure ran out Greenfield skipper Alex Peters.
No wonder “Shado” has already become a favourite in his five weeks at Little Hey Street.
The visitors’ total of 308 was always going to be a tall order for Greenfield. Peters, Mike Jones and Adam Robinson did their best to keep the hosts in the game – the latter struck a belligerent 39 – but there was always certainty about the outcome.
Next up for Heyside is a trip to Saddleworth, who swept through Hollinwood’s middle and late order to record a 70-run success at Lime Lane.
Saddleworth lost momentum until Steve Howard, with 35 not out, provided some lusty late resistance.
At 153 for four with 10 overs remaining, Hollinwood were in with a decent shout of making the semi-finals. But then it all went pear-shaped for the home side, as Saddleworth picked up the last half-dozen wickets for only 11 runs.
There were mixed fortunes for last year’s finalists.
Holders Uppermill’s defence was ended by Stayley, who secured a 64-run success at Millbrook.
Pro Kamran Hussain’s 81 and 58 from Mudassar Butt formed the backbone of the hosts’ total of 213.
Another pro kept the scorers’ busy at Oakfield.
Grant Hodnett was unbeaten on 77 as Moorside recorded an eight-wicket victory over a Droylsden team restricted to 153. Greg Ritchie top-scored with 41.
