TABLE tennis starlet Amirul Hussain is celebrating his first national success.
The Greenacres Primary School pupil won the England under-11s title without dropping an end.
Ranked number one in the country for his age meant Amirul by-passed regional qualifying rounds. He breezed through his group before ending the challenges of Louis Price, Joshua Weatherby and Freddie Osenton-Brown to set up a final against Louis Moyes.
And the youngster continued his dominance with a 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-9) triumph against his Norwich opponent.
Amirul, who plays for Glodwick A in the Oldham and District league, said: “It is really good to be a champion. I think my serve helped me to win.”
Amirul is no stranger to success on the national stage. He won the under-11 event at the Butterfly Schools’ Individual Championships - the 40th year of the prestigious English Schools’ Table Tennis Association’s individual championships, which saw 313 players competing across 21 tables.
After battling his way through matches against older opponents, Amirul met top seed Ethan Walsh from Hertfordshire in the final. The impressive young Oldhamer won 16-14, 11-7, 12-14, 1-11, 11-9 following a titanic clash.
Amirul has been highlighted by talent-spotters as having the potential to go a long way in the sport.
