Hugs and kisses for cup heroine

GOLF:
THERE can have been few more popular winners of the Women’s Chronicle Cup than 80-year-old Margaret Butterworth.
The Crompton and Royton member has been playing in the most prestigious competition in local golf for over 40 years; her title makes her the event’s oldest winner.
Her 91-20-71 one-over par return brought her a two-shot victory over a 70-strong field at wet and windy Werneth. And the superfit former HMSO Broadway worker admitted it was overwhelming to lift the trophy at her age.
“I thought my chance had gone. I lost a play-off to Pauline Givvens at Werneth in 1975 so it is amazing to actually win on the same course, 39 years later,” she said.
Margaret was swamped by hugs and kisses from her Crompton and Royton colleagues and club competitors alike when she returned for the evening’s presentation.
Oldham’s Julie Connolly was runner-up with a score of 100-23-73, which pipped the youngest competitor, 13-year-old Carina Teirney (Crompton and Royton). Carina won the silver division.
CROMPTON and Royton’s Long Handicap, a major at the High Barn club, will go to a play-off after Peter Wright (87-17-70) and Damian Harrison (88-18-70) returned the same nett scores.
Third place went to Anthony Cooke (90-18-72), while Wright’s 87 was the best gross return.
EDYTHE Turner won the main Spring Meeting prize at Oldham with a round of 92-23-69.
First sweep went to Jill Nolan (88-18-70), and the second to Mary Buckley (89-15-74). Jackie Lees posted the best gross score of 83.
Mr President’s single Stableford prize was won by Jill Nolan, who scored 34 points. She was followed by Wendy Cash (32) and Bev Scholes (31).
‘A’ CUP holders Ashton survived a first-round scare when they came through extra holes to beat Oldham ‘A’ 3-2 at Stamford.
Ashton had needed last-green wins from pairings Mike Kelly and Martin Wild and Kiran Metcalf and Darren Sharky to force it to the decider. It went to three extra holes before Neil Hallsworth and Ian Duncan prevailed.
