Ronnie Heffron: title beckons
BOXING:
RONNIE Heffron will fight unbeaten Welsh hard-man Liam Williams for the vacant WBO European light-middleweight title at the Manchester Arena next month.
Oldham star Heffron was originally set to face scouser Joe Selkirk, who has been plagued by various issues outside the ring and has vacated his European belt.
A former Great Britain team-mate of Heffron’s during the pair’s amateur days, replacement Williams has won nine and drawn one match in a 10-fight pro career. He is dangerous, but Heffron remains confident of extending his run to 16 wins from 17 fights, in the process taking his first major title.
Heffron, who has now rejoined his amateur trainer Nigel Travis at his Moss Side gym, said: “Williams is a big puncher I know from my amateur days. He was bigger back then and I didn’t fight him because he was never in my weight division.
“I reckon I’ll have the measure of him, though. He’s a bit inexperienced in the pro ranks and now I’ve gone back with Nigel at Moss Side I’m feeling much better. I’m learning new things all the time. I’m confident the European title will be coming back with me in July.”
