FAILSWORTH’S national junior ABA champion Danny Wright closed the amateur season in style with victory at a prestigious five-nations international tournament in Rzeszow, Poland.
Boarshaw Gym ace Wright (17) was among some top-quality boxers from England, Germany, Poland, Ukraine and France, and scored a points victory in the final of the 69kg class against French national champion, Amiinee Eveerlast.
After returning home from the two-day tournament, Oldham Sixth Form College student Wright said: “It was a great weekend in Rzeszow. I haven’t been there before and the people were brilliant.
“I knew it would be a tough final, but I definitely did more than enough to win.”
Wright, who has now featured in 50 amateur bouts, has had an up-and-down year, but there are no plans to consider a move to the professional ranks just yet: “I want to have a crack at the senior ABAs before I even think about the pros,” he said. “In the summer I’ll be back in training for the new season.”
Oldham’s Jack Kilgannon joined Wright and Lancaster in Poland, and was beaten in an early round by home-town favourite KR Pzpko.
