SAND wizard Shane Schofield won his second major of the year - the Centenary Vase at Stamford, in ice-cool fashion.
On a perfect day for scoring - 23 competitors had under-par returns – Schofield heard on the 17th tee that a leading 64 had already been posted.
After bogeying that hole, he needed a par on the 200-yard, par-three 18th to lead in the clubhouse.
Schofield’s tee-shot ended in the greenside bunker, but he produced a sensational escape to get his ball to within three inches of the pin.
The most decisive shot of the day helped him to repel all challengers.
BROOKDALE jumped to the top of a tightly-bunched ‘A’ Section West Division with an 8-0 home victory over Oldham - the first time in three seasons Gary Smith’s side claimed maximum points.
Only nine points cover the whole division at the halfway point in the regular season. Ashton and Dukinfield will hope their games in hand will boost play-off hopes.
Dukinfield’s 100 per cent record was ruined in a 5-3 defeat at Denton, but Ashton were delighted with a 4-4 draw at North Manchester.
Stamford continue to set the pace in the ‘A’ Section East Division after a 6-2 win over Werneth, who must win big in their two rain-delayed home games in order to get back in the mix.
EVERGREEN Tom Barlow posted a fine score of 81-19-62 to win his third Brookdale major at the age of 65.
His fantastic return in the Wainwright Cup gave him victory over Mike Taylor (72-8-64), who beat Philip McConnell (83-19-64) in a card play-off.
SUE Booth won the Lady Captain’s Trophy at Saddleworth with a superb two-round return of nett 146, comprising scores of 75 and 71.
The first round was played in continuous rain, while the second had to be put back a few days after more rain left some of the greens unplayable.
Thankfully, the rescheduled round two was blessed by sunshine which Booth made the most of to win by an eight stroke margin from Eileen Simpson (88-66-154).
First-round winner was Jenny Knight with a nett 74, while second-round honours went to lady vice-captain Pam Tomlinson (97-19-78), on the card from Pam Taylor.
