CRICKET: IT was a match in which one of two teams would break its CLL duck for the season.

Alas for Werneth, it was hosts Clifton who picked up maximum points in the premier division fixture.

On another Saturday when not one of our four local clubs was able to win, Werneth had the best chance but fluffed it.

Clifton took first guard and effectively put the game beyond Matt Taylor’s side by racking up 237 for eight. In reply, Werneth were bowled out for 166 despite professional Mohammed Zaman Khan’s knock of 62. Callum Parkinson took four for 47.

Werneth’s Premier Division neighbours Royton also suffered defeat, succumbing by seven wickets at home to Walsden. Royton batted first and were bowled out for 146, visiting professional Umesh Karunaratne taking four for 38.

The Sri Lankan then led the way with the bat, hitting 63 in Walsden’s 148 for three.

Championship action saw defeat for Crompton and Oldham. Crompton suffered a horrible loss at home to Milnrow, being bowled out for 81 before the visitors raced to 81 for three.

Lee Storey (five for 14) and Aaron Brown (five for 37) starred with the ball for Milnrow, while pro Rudi Second hit a quickfire, unbeaten 54.

Oldham were again unable to field a professional as they went down by three wickets at Unsworth.

Rizwan Javed scored 31 as Oldham were bowled out for 152, Liam Richards taking four for 33.

In reply, Unsworth made 153 for seven thanks to Jeff Keyt’s 35.
