WERNETH’S mixed foursomes team pulled off a shock 5-2 win at Leigh in the second round of this year’s Archie Preston trophy.

Winners of the trophy three seasons ago, Werneth got wins from Lee and Tracey Rowbotham (7&5), Paul Rowbotham and Madge Griffiths (2&1), James Buckley and Glynis Jones (3&2) before last-green successes for club captains Paul Gough and Patricia Grant and Jack Suttie and Gail Rowbotham sealed the last-16 place.

The last 16 was as far as the Werneth team got in the new Manchester Alliance senior competition when they went down to a disappointing 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Fairfield. Werneth are joined by Saddleworth in the last 16 of the Archie Preston.

PACESETTERS Stamford and Blackley have been pegged back in the ‘A’ Section East Division.

Stamford went down 6-2 at Saddleworth, but Blackley’s 6-2 home defeat to Werneth was more of a shock and, with two rearranged home games to play, the Garden Suburb club could still break into the play-off picture.

Brookdale continue to lead the ‘A’ West after a 6-2 home victory over North Manchester.

And the top two in the ‘B’ West – Ashton and Dukinfield — played out a 4-4 draw which keeps both in good position.

LYNN Truelove proved herself the most consistent performer over two rounds in winning the lady captain’s prize at Crompton and Royton. Her score of 163-18-145 earned her a nine-shots victory over runner-up Val Hall (200-46-154).

First-day prize went to Christine Rimmer (97-21-76), while second-day honours were landed by Maureen Delaney (93-23-70).

Mary Buckley was the clear winner of the Captain’s 36-hole competition, a major at OLDHAM.

She recorded 165-29-136 to finish eight shots ahead of runner-up Liz Johnson (170-26-144).

Bev Scholes (76-9-67) and Julia Wild (86-19-67) won the first and second prizes respectively.

The best gross was registered by Lynn Kershaw (166), while the sweep went to Sheila Antrobus (182-38-144).
