Cycling has enjoyed a surge in popularity in recent years thanks to the heroics of stars such as Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome.

And now new, far less experienced riders at grassroots level can grab their own piece of the action by joining the Saddleworth Clarion cycling club.

Clarion currently boasts a 70-strong membership but, as cycling fanatic Steve Carson explains, they are hoping to expand.

“Clarion’s current membership are generally quite experienced cyclists, but now we’re hoping that maybe some younger riders would like to get involved,” said Steve.

“In fact we cater for all ages, but for those less experienced riders we plan to organise a series of shorter-distance and flat rides.

“Cycling is just a great sport to keep you fit, and of course the Tour de France is passing by Greater Manchester on July 6 (during the York to Sheffield leg), so these are exciting times all round, whatever level you ride at.

“There’s a social element to the sport, too. Cycling gets you out and meeting new people, and we arrange regular meetings and get-togethers.”

Saddleworth Clarion have now begun their new “bring your bike” taster rides. Riders of all ages and abilities can meet on the final Saturday of each month at the Java Bar in High Street, Uppermill (9am for a 9.30am start). Details on the club website: www.saddleworthclarion.co.uk
