I belong at British title level — Kays

Boxing: OLDHAM favourite Jon Kays is back in the gym and gunning for another title shot.

It is just over a month since Ashton-based Kays (31) lost controversially to Dewsbury’s Gary Sykes when he was stopped in the 10th round of a cracking British super-featherweight title scrap.

That fourth defeat of a 23-fight pro career was a crushing blow - but ‘Two Smokes’ Kays is now fully re-energised.

“It was a big disappointment losing to Sykes, of course. We all know the fight was unfairly ended,” he said.

“But that’s boxing for you. There’s ups and downs, and right now the only way is up again for me.

“I’ve proved beyond doubt I belong at British title level now, so it’s just a question of working hard and getting another shot as soon as possible.”

Kays’ manager Steve Wood is busy behind the scenes plotting his charge’s next step - possibly another British title shot next month at the Manchester Arena, but more likely at Oldham Sports Centre in late September or early October.
