WERNETH is the only club to have both sides through to the Oldham and District Golf League’s cup semi-finals.
The club’s ‘A’ team had the easiest of all the quarter-final passages in beating Fairfield 4.5-0.5 on the testing Crompton and Royton course. Werneth’s ‘B’ team was delighted to topple North Manchester 3-2 at Saddleworth.
Werneth ‘A’ will face a local derby against Brookdale at neutral Ashton. The reward for the ‘B’ team is a trip to Denton to meet Fairfield.
In the other half of the draw, Dukinfield edged out Stamford 3-2 at Blackley and now face Ashton at Brookdale.
Ashton edged past Blackley at Stamford by a narrow 3-2 margin. Blackley reversed that result in the ‘B’ Cup at Denton and now face Denton, who beat Stamford 3-2 at Ashton.
STEVE Mills added his name to another winners’ board when he landed the Eddie Hopkinson Memorial, a major at Crompton and Royton.
His return of 41 points enabled him to fend off Tom Read on a card play-off.
A second major at the High Barn course saw Mark Barrett win the Centenary Trophy with a brilliant round of 68-6-62. That gave him a four-shot success over Jason Webster (73-7-66).
CROMPTON and Royton professional Martin Beaty (right) will become the Lancashire academy coach in 2015.
Since the formation of the new Lancashire golf partnership this year, significant improvements have been made to promote and develop golf in the county.
Crompton and Royton has been actively involved and will have its own regional development centre.
Beaty’s goal will be to identify and develop boys between the age of 14 and 18 to elite level.
