Kings of the Castle

NINE-YEAR-OLD Tom White was Micklehurst’s hero as they clinched their first Saddleworth and District Cricket League title since returning to the competition in 2011.

The Castle Lane outfit were crowned the Under-17s Division champions after a thrilling success against close rivals Friarmere.

Requiring five runs for victory from the last over, Micklehurst lost their sixth wicket off the first ball.

Scrambled runs, courtesy of a couple of mis-fields, increased the tension and with the two deliveries remaining the scores were level.

Another wicket brought young White to the crease, who promptly steered the final ball through the gully region for winning run.

Seconds later he was mobbed by his team-mates as they celebrated clinching top honours.

Friarmere were dismissed for 85, which included 50 (retired) from Bradley Cunningham.

The Micklehurst team have won silverware at every age group, after clinching the Huddersfield League Under-13s Division title in 2010 and the Saddleworth League’s under-15s Leicester Shield in 2012.
