Saddleworth and District Cricket League by KEVIN RICHARDSON
CRICKET greats from around the globe are set to converge on Holebottom Clough.
Lashings All Stars are heading to Shaw’s ground on Mark Lane for a special fund-raising match against an XI from the host club on Friday, September 5.
Shaw officials are hoping for a big crowd for the Twenty20 clash, which is sure to be rich in entertainment.
Gate receipts on the day — see below for admission details — are going to Harry Andrew, the community stalwart and Shaw club legend who was paralysed from the neck down following a freak accident.
One of the most popular characters on the Saddleworth and District Cricket League scene, Harry fell from a ladder while cutting a hedge at the ground last year.
He was taken to a specialist unit at Southport and Formby District General after the accident before being transferred to a care home in Preston.
Harry is now back in Oldham and living at Chadderton Total Care Unit, Middlewood Court, to be closer to his family and friends.
He returned to the club earlier this season to spend a few moments watching a second XI match, and now the club are hoping the cricketing public will come out in force to lend their support.
The Lashings squad features some familiar names in world cricket, including Herschelle Gibbs, Saqlain Mustaq, Courtney Walsh, Mohammed Yousuf, Devon Malcolm, Phil Defreitas, Chris Schofield and Sanath Jayasuriya.
Although the final XI won’t be revealed until nearer the time, it is believed South African batsman Gibbs and England duo Malcolm and Defreitas will be in the XI.
Admission is £5, while entry for juniors (under-16s) is by donation.
The match gets under way at 3.30pm approximately but not before.
Sponsorship and event packages are available. For more details, contact Mark Stafford on 01274 420206 or 07803 266758. Alternatively, email mark.stafford@dentsteel.co.uk
