CLL ROUND-UP
CROMPTON are a runaway express train in the Lake Garage CLL Championship.
Simon Wright’s cock-a-hoop troops have won their last six matches – several in emphatic style – to propel themselves firmly into the promotion race.
Crompton are just two points behind second-placed Milnrow and one adrift of Unsworth.
A place in the top two would guarantee promotion to next season’s Premier Division.
Milnrow were beaten – albeit narrowly – at Glebe Street on Sunday, and Unsworth succumbed at home in mid-July, so Crompton are clearly the form team in the race to go up.
Crompton barely broke sweat to beat Oldham at the Pollards on Saturday.
Carl Taylor took three home wickets in his first over and at one stage had figures of five for one as the hosts capitulated.
Oldham did manage to scramble 65 runs, but Crompton knocked them off for the loss of a single wicket.
Sunday’s game at home to Milnrow was a thriller, however.
An estimated crowd of 200 watched a run-fest which saw Crompton make 243 for seven before Milnrow came up four runs short for the loss of eight wickets.
Said Wright: “It was a belting wicket, the best we have played on all season.
“When we looked at it we said we probably needed 250, but having said that if you get the score we did you expect to win much more than you lose.
“They had a go, though, and the result was in doubt until the last ball.
“This was a game we had talked about as being vital we won and we are delighted we did so. It was a great game to play in, too.”
