Dramatic finale in race to bag play-off places
Date published: 08 August 2014
THE play-off places in the Oldham and District Golf League were decided in dramatic fashion.
Werneth ‘A’ won two matches on the last green to beat off the challenge of Stamford 6-2 to secure the East division title as Blackley were held 4-4 at home by Crompton and Royton.
Dukinfield ‘A’ clinched top spot in the West Division with a 6-2 home win over Denton.
They were joined in the last four by Ashton despite them losing 6-2 at home in their final clash with North Manchester.
Ashton were saved by the fact that chasers Denton went down at Ashton while Brookdale, who could also have caught them, crashed 8-0 at Oldham as Garry Smith’s men failed to register a win in their last four games.
There was despair for Crompton and Royton ‘B’ in the East Division.
They drew 4-4 with table-topping Blackley, but missed out by a point as Stamford whitewashed Werneth on the slick Mossley-course greens to nick second place by a single point.
But Oldham scraped into the play-offs by the smallest of margins after they lost 7-1 in a rescheduled game at divisional winners North Manchester.
