Oldham reverse Plate fortunes

Garstang 1st XV 13, Oldham RUFC 17
OLDHAM have reached the second round of the Lancashire Plate for the first time in years.
Normally the fixture clashes with rugby league’s Challenge Cup final and, as most of Oldham’s RL enthusiasts head south, the local rugby union side suffers. This time a strong Oldham team headed up the M6.
Both teams began with attacking intent on an excellent playing surface. Oldham’s defence was uncompromising and the first significant attacking opportunity saw them take the lead.
Following some pressure around the Garstang 22, Martin Hamer burst through the home-side’s defence and off-loaded to Ryan North, who scored beside the posts. Callum Meagram added the extras to put Oldham seven points ahead.
The visitors extended their lead before half-time when the defence opened and Josh Watson ran in unopposed to score under the posts. Meagram again added the extras.
Garstang regrouped after half-time and Oldham lost some of their structure and discipline.
The gap was closed with 15 minutes to go. Leading only 14-13, Oldham worked their way into the opposition 22 and were awarded a penalty, converted by Meagram.
The next round of the Plate is not until Saturday, February 14, when Oldham go to Southport, who beat Didsbury Toc H 27-5.
