CRICKET: Crompton closed their 2014 Lake Garage CLL Championship campaign with a big bang — despite missing promotion.
The Glebe Street outfit crushed neighbours Oldham by 220 runs on Saturday after clocking up 349 for three, a new club record.
The unbroken 250-run, fourth-wicket partnership between overseas amateur Denis Louis (120 not out) and veteran Mel Austin (123 not out) was also a club best.
Crompton finished third, six points adrift of promoted Unsworth and 20 behind eventual divisional champions Monton and Weaste.
On Sunday, Louis was in good form again, hitting an unbeaten 60 in an eight-wicket win against runners-up Unsworth.
Oldham ended up propping up the rest in the second tier, having closed on 33 points with Ashton.
Werneth’s relegation from the Premier Division was confirmed, but Royton finished a creditable fifth despite back-to-back defeats last weekend.
