GOLF:
GLYN Broady became a major winner when he landed the Zacharias Cup at Crompton and Royton.
The 10-handicapper shot a gross 73 for a nett 63 and two-shots victory over Martin Bottomley (79-14-65).
Third place went to Alan Pickles, on the card, after a round of 81-14-67, while the best gross score was a fine 69 from Kris Sutcliffe.
MATTY Heap played through the pain barrier to win Brookdale’s David and Sheila Johnson Trophy, a four-ball, better-ball competition, alongside Gary Whitaker.
Heap broke his hand playing football but was determined to play. The pair beat Steve Price and Andy Hadfield 2 and 1
On the same day, Tony Hart capped a superb campaign in Brookdale’s President’s Cup with a 2 and 1 victory over Paul Wood in the final played over 36 holes. The 16-handicapper had beaten six top players to reach the final and he made no mistake in his last game against six-handicapper Wood.
WERNETH scratch golfer Lee Rowbotham made it a hat-trick of knock-out majors this season when he beat Tony Roddy 5 and 4 in the final of the Mellor Cup. Lee had earlier won the club’s Challenge (singles) and Hetherington (pairs better-ball) competitions.
ANN Allen cruised to victory in the EGWA medal and Bunty Booth qualifier at Saddleworth with a round of 88-22-66. Runner-up, seven shots behind, was Sue Booth after her round of 96-23-73.
