RUGBY: HOLLINWOOD’S search for a first Pennine League win of the season continues — but again there was much to like about their performance in the 34-28 home loss to Hanging Heaton.
The hosts made a great start to the Division Five clash, with Reece Bradshaw breaking clear from the scrum and sprinting 25 yards to score under the posts. Andy Gorey kicked the conversion.
Before the visitors could regroup, Hollinwood were in again. Jordan Curtis this time dived over and Gorey added the extras for a 12-0 lead.
Previously unbeaten Hanging Heaton responded with a converted try and, buoyed by that score, took control of the contest at Fields New Road by adding two more converted tries to leave Hollinwood 18-12 adrift at the break.
Hollinwood tore into their opponents after the restart and were rewarded when Jack Mayall touched down in the left corner. The conversion was missed.
A fourth converted try stretched Hanging Heaton’s lead, but Hollinwood hit back when Pete Davies found a gap and scored. Gorey made no mistake with the goal attempt to put Hollinwood only two points behind at 24-22. Back came Hanging Heaton with a couple of tries and a conversion, but Hollinwood raced up the other end and Pete Jackson collected a deft pass from Gorey to score. The latter added the extras.
THERE are no amateur fixtures this weekend because of the First Utility Super League Grand Final on Saturday.
