RUGBY:
MARK Flanagan and Jordan Turner weren’t the only Oldham winners at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Saddleworth School teacher Gary Melling and experienced touchjudge Tony Martin received awards after being recognised by the Rugby Football League.
Melling was given the RFL Community Teacher of the Year award, while Martin was named Community Official of the Year.
Melling was at Old Trafford to watch St Helens beat Wigan Warriors to win Super League’s Grand Final, but was unable to attend the prize-giving because he was looking after 30 youngsters.
He explained: “I was only told I was on the short list 10 days ago, but the trip had been arranged for about 10 months. My dad went in my place and sent me a text to say I’d won.
“I was overwhelmed when I picked up an Oldham Sports Award last year — that was an emotional occasion — but this is the icing on the cake.”
Melling, who turned 41 last Saturday, was named the RFL’s North-West Community Teacher of the Year in August. A teacher at Saddleworth School for 13 years, he added: “I love my job and I love rugby league, so I feel immensely proud and honoured.
Martin, a touchjudge of immense experience, was also officiating 24 hours after being acknowledged by the RFL. The 59 year old, from Grasscroft, has graced some of the biggest stages in rugby league, from the World Cup final, to the Super League Grand Final and World Club Championship.
This award recognised his contribution to the amateur game - he also officiates in the National Conference and Pennine League as well as local junior games.
