Webster weaves Pennine magic

Angling: STEVE Webster, of Tri-Cast Calder, took first place in round two of the Pennine Winter League on the Todmorden lengths of the Rochdale Canal.

Opting for caster and bread, Webster caught a tench and two big skimmers which weighed in at 7lb 3oz.

Runner-up Andy Sweeney used worm and caster for 6lb 12oz of skimmers and roach. The leading team on the day were Slaithwaite, with Maver Red in second place. The Mirfield Canal is the venue for round three on Sunday.



ORGANISER Tony Horton was the winner of an open event on the Swingbridge length of the Peak Forest Canal.

The Edgeley Sports rod used bread punch tight across for 4lb 9oz of roach.

Drawn on the next peg, Brian Meadows (Leigh Tackle and Bait) was second, with identical tactics tempting 3lb 12oz of small roach.

Section winners were: Dave Barnard (Maver NW) 1lb 9oz; Alan Crook (Maver NW) 1lb 8oz.

IAN Cox put his rivals in the shade in the latest Diggle AC Tuesday match on an in-form Tanners Dam.

Drawn on peg 14, Cox employed the waggler, tip and maggot to catch three carp and plenty of silvers for a 19lb 14oz net.

Organiser Dave Machin (Fibrecare) was runner-up, using a long pole and pellet for 15lb of carp and skimmers.



I MANAGED fourth place on the Mirfield Canal thanks to 5lb 12oz of roach on bread punch at nine and 11 metres. Roach to 6oz were the target and they came in spasms.

Keith Marshall was the winner. He had a 9lb 12oz catch, which included roach and perch on bread punch and pinkie.

Richard Jackson, in second place, returned a 7lb 12oz net of decent roach on pole-fished pinkie.

Warren McCleavey, in third place, used bread and worm for 6lb 2oz of roach and perch.



STUART Bird bagged £250 after winning the latest match in the Wigan Winter League series on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Burscough.

The Ted Carter Preston rod used bread punch across to a reedbed for 7lb 2oz of small roach. Second-best, team-mate Carl Robinson, had 6lb 4oz 10drams net of roach, also on bread punch.



Ted Carter Preston were the leading team on the day with 16 points, followed by Matrix Halifax (27pts) and Saints (29pts).

I was drawn in a decent spot in the town centre and claimed third in my section with 5lb 11oz 6drams of skimmers and roach. I employed bread punch and pinkie at five, nine and 14 metres. Leading the way after two rounds are Saints with five points.

Maver NW, Ted Carter Preston and Wigan MG are joint second on six points.



THE Todmorden AS’s grand Christmas match is at Croft and Townhouse Fisheries on December 12.

Draw is up to 9am at the Falcon Hotel, Littleborough, with the trophy presentation and dinner held at the same venue at 3.30pm. Tickets are £12 for seniors and £6 for junior, which includes food.



THE Miners Arms length of the Macclesfield Canal at Poynton fished well at the weekend.

Big perch were the counters, with the winner boasting 10lb of them.
