Alan Wright is to retire later this month after 42 seasons as a senior league official.
Mr Wright (80) became assistant secretary to Edwin Kay in 1973 and took over as league secretary in 1990. He became a life member of the CLL in 2000 and has long been recognised a pivotal figure in the league.
Mr Wright, from Ashton, played youth cricket at Rayner Lane before becoming first-team scorer at the age of 16. He did that for several seasons before becoming Ashton assistant secretary and later, its secretary.
He gave up the latter role and his position as a league representative for Ashton, but league chairman Joan Coakley set him on the road to almost a lifetime of service to the CLL.
He said: “John told me there was the position as assistant secretary available and did I want to do it.
“I agreed and I have been assistant secretary or secretary ever since.”
Mr Wright will formally relinquish his post at the CLL’s annual meeting at Middleton on Friday, November 28. His job is expected to go to Unsworth’s Tom Williams
