Chidi Onuoha: part of Oldham’s solid defence
HOCKEY:
OLDHAM firsts produced an accomplished performance to beat third-placed Crewe Vagrants 2-0 in Division Two South-West of the North Hockey Manchester League.
A bright start at Newman College saw Oldham give Crewe no time on the ball.
The visitors became frustrated and tried to hit Oldham on the break, but the hosts’ defence stood firm.
Oldham dominated play but couldn’t get a clear shot at goal - until Karen Rowley picked up a pass from Racheal Johnson and hit an unstoppable effort.
In the opening exchanges of the second half, Crewe forced several corners but was unable to penetrate the Oldham back line.
With the defence secure, Oldham sensed an opportunity to get a second goal - but had to wait until five minutes from the end to break through.
The victory moved Oldham to within a point of Crewe.
