Bulger sparkles in Ronnie’s absence

FAILSWORTH-based lightweight prospect Jake Bulger made it two wins from two professional fights on Saturday at Oldham Sports Centre as he convincingly outpointed Birmingham journeyman Sid Razak.

Fans shrugged off the disappointment of missing out on seeing home town star Ronnie Heffron in action – he was ruled out through illness – as Bulger (21) lit up the VIP Boxing promotion with a 60 points to 54 success against Razak following six impressive two-minute rounds.

The main shock of the evening came courtesy of defeat for Accrington’s Artif Ali, who lost for the first time in seven bouts on points to Lincoln’s Bobby Jenkinson.

Zelfa Barrett – nephew of former British champion Pat – won his second straight fight in the paid ranks thanks to a first-round knock-out of Swindon’s Joe Beedon.

Liverpool lightweight hopeful Andy Colquhoun stretched his unbeaten record to 11 fights thanks to a dominant 60 points to 54 victory over gutsy Nuneaton journeyman Kristian Laight.

Leeds’ Justin Newell beat Jamie Quinn over four rounds in the lightweight division, while there was a satisfactory debut for former amateur cruiserweight ace Charlie Schofield from Droylsden.

The ex-junior ABA champion gained a 40 points to 36 decision from referee John Latham following his bout against Jason Jones.
