Raining goals

MOSSLEY showed character as they came from 2-0 down to beat Evo-Stik League Division One North basement battlers Padiham 3-2 on New Year’s Day.

The Lilywhites initially struggled on a muddy pitch. Former Southampton, Blackpool, Nottingham Forest and Athletic loanee striker Brett Ormerod was causing plenty of problems for the hosts’ back-line, and the 38 year old opened the scoring four minutes before half-time.

When Ormerod doubled Padiham’s lead seven minutes after the restart, prospects looked gloomy for Mossley.

But Peter Band and Lloyd Morrison’s men suddenly sprang into life, with Kyle McGonigle halving the deficit in the 57th minute.

It was left to Sam Robinson to take over as the Lilywhites hero, as his goals in the 69th and 80th minutes turned the match on its head.

It was a breathtaking victory in the end, one which will give Mossley a much-needed confidence boost ahead of tomorrow’s tough trip to Division One North leaders Northwich Victoria.

A VICTORY at fellow North-West Counties League First Division side Rochdale Town tomorrow would leapfrog CHADDERTON above their opponents in the table.

Rock-bottom OLDHAM BORO, meanwhile, face the daunting prospect of a home test against second-placed Atherton Collieries at Seel Park.
