ROYTON-based light-heavyweight prospect John Newell has earned a place in the Great Britain team which will contest Series V of the prestigious World Series Boxing tournament.
Newell (21), who has trained under head coach Ben Lancaster at the Boarshaw Gym for the last two years, is one of four British Lionhearts squad members in the 81kg category. Each national team boasts 10 weight divisions.
Tournaments take place all around the world between January and April, with teams from America, Cuba, Mexico and Russia among others.
A delighted Newell said: “I’m over the moon to have been selected. The World Series is a major, major tournament which features bouts that are more professional-style.
“It’s like the Premier League of amateur boxing and I’m really excited about the prospect of making my debut. Being selected also helps with Olympic qualification, so everything is looking good for me this year.”
The Lionhearts’ first World Series fixture of the year takes place tomorrow week, January 15, when they take on China at the iconic York Hall venue in Bethnal Green, London.
But competing comes literally at a price. While Newell is delighted to have earned his place, taking part will be expensive – particularly the foreign trips. If you feel you might be in a position to help him, call him on 07834 706898.
