Louise Howard shoots at goal
HOCKEY: AFTER an accomplished performance in defeat against high-flying Alderley Edge, Oldham firsts were hoping another good display would produce a win in the Women’s North Manchester Hockey League.
But they found Didsbury Northern’s second string too hot to handle as they slumped to a 4-1 loss at Newman College.
Oldham started the Division Two South-West clash well, forcing the visitors’ goalkeeper into a couple of smart saves. But Didsbury gained momentum as the game wore on and, after winning a midfield battle, won a short corner from which they took the lead.
Though the home side continued to push forward, Didsbury often won the ball back quickly and players were adept at closing down space.
Happy to get to half-time only a goal adrift, Oldham then had a tactical rethink, while captain Fran Lees tried to rally her troops.
Didsbury started the second half in the ascendancy, and unable to get a foothold in the game, Oldham were forced into defensive errors.
