GOLF: A LOCAL golf organisation has benefited to the tune of £4,444 thanks to the generosity of lady members at Crompton and Royton.
The Scroungers Golf Society has raised more than £250,000 in the last 25 years, the money being spent on high-tech electric wheelchairs for severely disabled youngsters.
Crompton and Royton lady captain for 2014, Julie Barton, chose the group as her charity and one event alone made £3,500. This year’s captain, Marjorie Bray, is planning to organise a similar fund-raising day.
One of the society’s recent recipients was Anthony Kelly, from Blackley. He received the 175th wheelchair.
OLDHAM GEMS beat the weather to enjoy a three-man Texas scramble, and leading the way with a nett 37 were the trio of Peter Bennion, Geoff Beard and Trevor Cash.
They finished clear of Harold McGuinness, Ken Lunn and Charlie Middlewood (37.5), and Ray Buckley, Mike Dunkerley and Peter Schofield (38.5).
SKY Sports has been awarded exclusive rights to live television coverage of the Open Championship in a five–year deal from 2017, the R&A has announced.
Sky is taking over rights from the BBC, which had a 60–year partnership with golf’s oldest major.
The new deal begins with the 146th Open Championship in July 2017.
