FOOTBALL: A WELCOME thaw brought relief to harassed Lancashire and Cheshire League fixturesecretaries with virtually a full programme of league and cup action.
In the Premier Division, AFC Oldham were held to a 2-2 home draw by relegation-threatened Chorltonians.
It was catch-up time in the Rhodes Cup and Oldham Victoria took Premier Division side Parrs Wood Celtic all the way before losing out 2-1 in the last minute of extra-time.
Vics were denied by the woodwork a few minutes from the end of extra-time in a game that was a credit to both teams.
There were huge celebrations for Santos in Division One as they secured their first win of the season in a 6-5 special against Newton Heath (see seperate story on Page 30).
In the Whitehead Cup Hooley Bridge Celtic won 4-2 at AFC Oldham, while in Division ‘E’, leaders AFC Oldham fifths edged out Govan Athletic thirds 1-0.
CHADDERTONIANS returned from Rossendale with a creditable 3-3 draw in Division One of the Lancashire Amateur League.
In Division Two, Failsworth Dynamos’ second string drew 2-2 at home against Radcliffe Town.
IT proved a disappointing day for Springhead in the FBT Manchester League Premier Division as they fell to a 3-1 home defeat against fellow mid-table outfit Manchester Gregorians.
There was better news for Royton Town, however, as they beat Prestwich Heys 2-1. See Match of the Day.
Hollinwood secured a big win in Division One as they thumped Bolton visitors Breightmet United 5-0.
Meanwhile, in the West Riding Challenge Cup, Springhead’s reserves were in terrific form as they triumphed 4-2 at Hunslet.
In the Division Three Open Trophy, Ryan Hughes was on target as Uppermill’s second string lost 2-1 at Prestwich Heys reserves.
