TABLE TENNIS:
BARRY Elliott lifted the men’s singles title at the Oldham and District Table Tennis League Closed Championship — but was denied a double.
Elliott, who plays for Hollinwood, beat Darryl Meredith (Honeywell Lane) 9-11, 13-11, 11-13, 11-7, 11-8 in the final after overcoming Wayne Renton in the semi-final.
Meredith’s last-four victim in the tournament held at Hulme Grammar was defending champion Andrew Jackson.
Elliott hoped to follow up in the veterans’ showdown against holder Jackson (Glodwick), but had to play second fiddle (12-10, 11-9, 11-8). James Chappell, of Glodwick, collected the junior crown after defeating Glodwick’s Amir Hussain (14-12, 4-11, 11-5, 7-11, 11-8).
But Hussain made amends as, alongside club-mate Majid Tubasum, he won the doubles title with victory over 2014 winners Nathan Buckley and Paul King, of Saddleworth, in straight games (12-10, 11-6, 12-10).
The over-60s competition was decided on a round robin format between qualifiers Tommy Ryan, Stuart Meredith and Joe Redikin. Unbeaten Ryan (Honeywell) emerged victorious
