Errors prove costly for gutsy Heyside

FOOTBALL:

HUDDERSFIELD League First Division outfit Shelley proved too strong for Heyside as the local side were crushed 6-1 in the quarter-final of the Barlow Cup.

The scoreline didn’t tell the full story, however, as Heyside played their hosts off the park at times, but couldn’t find a finish. At the other end, Shelley’s finishing was clinical.

Individual errors gifted the side from a division above a warranted three-goal lead at the break.

Heyside did pull a goal back five minutes after the restart when, after good work from Josh Briddon in the box, Danny Wooliscroft curled home.

Despite some heavy pressure in the opening quarter of the second half, the home side caught Heyside on the break and after 65 minutes, effectively sealed the game with a fourth goal past the hapless Jack Suttie.

Heyside conceded two further unanswered goals and despite having the most of the possession, weren’t able to capitalise in the final third.

“To say I’m disappointed with the result is an understatement,” groaned Heyside boss Geoff Howard.

“That was never a 6-1 game, but if we are as sloppy at both ends as were here, then that’s what can happen.

“At times we played a good side off the park. I’m definitely looking for a reaction from the boys now as we travel to Linthwaite for a crucial game this weekend.”

In the Groom Cup, 3D Dynamos beat Junction 5-0 thanks to strikes from Nik Lishman (two), Mark Taylor, Michael Bainbridge and Jake Longmore.

Diggle’s ‘A’ team went goal crazy, thumping Hade Edge ‘A’ 10-1.
