MARK Jackson netted twice as Uppermill FC’s third team reached the semi-finals of the Huddersfield and District League’s Groom Cup.
On a spongy – in parts – surface at Churchill playing fields, Uppermill took control from the start, but it took until the 36th minute for them to assert their authority with a goal.
Uppermill joint-manager Phil Butterworth said: “The scoreline reflected how we played and although it was a fairly even game at times, we took control and looked good, especially in the second half.
“It is good that we are in line for a league and cup double, but as far as the league is concerned, we would need other results to go our way.”
Jackson set Uppermill on their way with a cross-cum-shot that found the top corner of the Almondbury net.
If Jackson’s delivery was intended as a cross then it was a little fortuitous – if it was intended as a shot then it was a cracking goal.
Either way, it was just what Uppermill needed and Butterworth’s side doubled its advantage when Andy Thorpe powered home a 20-yard drive low into the bottom corner.
With Lee Rainford pulling the strings in midfield, Uppermill were firmly in control at that stage.
However, Almondbury pulled a goal back with nine minutes remaining, but any hopes they had of a comeback were scuppered with just a few minutes remaining when Jackson’s mazy run from the halfway line ended with a neat finish fron 16 yards.
Uppermill will now meet Colne Valley at a neutral venue on a date to be arranged.
