Oldham Netball Club: fourth title in a row
OLDHAM Netball Club’s Premier League side needed one point from their final game to clinch the title for a fourth season in a row.
And they got it — despite losing 56-51 at home to Essex-based New Cambell.
Relieved Oldham gained a bonus point by scoring more than half their opponents’ tally at Hathershaw College.
The visitors held a narrow 12-11 lead at the first break, with Oldham working hard to prevent the ball entering the circle.
Coach Debbie Hallas replaced captain Kerry Almond for the second quarter, with Abby Tyrell coming on at goal keeper. But New Cambell dominated this phase of the game. Sloppy play from Oldham’s attack allowed the away side to claim many intercepts.
Facing a 30-19 deficit, Oldham made a raft of changes which helped the side to cut the deficit to seven goals (42-35) with a quarter remaining.
New Cambell’s advantage was five points at one stage of the final period, but it was too little too late from Oldham.
A fourth league triumph in a row was a first in the competition’s history.
