TABLE TENNIS:
OWLS ‘A’ are on the up in Division Four of the Oldham and District Table Tennis League.
A 7-3 defeat of third-placed Hollinwood ‘E’ guaranteed promotion.
Meanwhile, in Division One, father and son Rob and Paul Carter combined with Dave Cheetham — they each won two sets — to help Honeywell ‘B’ overcome basement side Rosehill 6-4.
Leaders Glodwick ‘B’ took another huge step toward securing the title with an emphatic 9-1 success at Werneth ‘A’, while Glodwick ‘A’ beat their Honeywell counterparts 6-4.
Bottom team Saddleworth ‘C’ conceded their Division Two game to Honeywell ‘D’, but then acquired the services of Adam Rowbotham and Andrew Tarpey to see off second-placed Hollinwood ‘B’ 6-4.
And leaders Uppermill ‘A’ also suffered defeat, losing 6-4 at Hyde YMCA ‘B’. Steve Hilton bagged a treble and Denis Bradshaw a double for Hyde.
Honeywell ‘E’ had mixed results in Division Three, beating bottom-of-the-table Deaf ‘B’ 9-1 and then losing 6-4 to third-placed Unison ‘C’.
Already-promoted Unison ‘B’ were stretched to the limit in clinching a 6-4 triumph against Hollinwood ‘D’.
Fred Pickles and Graham Mathers notched hat-tricks for Pollards ‘C’, who brushed aside Our Lady’s ‘B’ 8-2 to claim top honours.
Hollinwood ‘F’ require six points from their remaining match against Uppermill ‘D’ to deny the juniors of Unison ‘E’ in the race for second spot.
