Gordon back at the helm

GOLF: GORDON Lamb has embarked on a second stint as captain of Crompton and Royton in his 28th year as a member of the High Barn club.

Captain in 2011, Gordon was happy to accept the post again when approached: “I’ll be doing my best to promote the club,” he said. “Like everyone else, we suffered a loss of members, but we have built it back up again.

“There are incentives, such as graduated fees from 18 years to 30, and parents who have full seven-day membership can bring their children to play the course free of charge. The course is in very good condition, too, thanks to the hard work of the groundstaff and greens committee.”

Gordon (66) has been married to Marilyn for 46 years during which time the couple have lived in the same address in Royton.

He plays off 15.6, which is only marginally higher than his golfing best of 15, and has won his club’s President’s Salver – a mixed foursomes event – four times with four different partners.

Retired since the age of 63, Gordon worked as a senior aircraft engineer at British Aerospace in Chadderton.

He aims to raise money for two charities during his captaincy – Dr Kershaw’s Hospice and Reuben’s Retreat in Ashton. To that end, he will be staging a four-ball, better-ball fund-raising competition, organised by Chris King and Peter Wright, on August 28.
