STEVE Mills admitted to being thrown in at the deep end accepting the Oldham Golf Club captaincy for 2015.
Mills was asked to fill the position in February after the departure of last year’s vice-captain.
“It has come quicker than I anticipated, but I’m looking forward to it,” said Steve. “My vice-captain, Stan Ganley, is a good friend and I’m sure we’ll work well together. I’d like to attract more societies and functions to the club - and hopefully a few more members as well.”
Mills is in his 25th year as an Oldham member, during which time he has collected a string of major competitions. The 11 handicapper — he has been as low as eight — has won the Vets trophy twice, the Centenary and the Fawcett Cup.
Mills is also a regular on the other side of the Pennines in the Lawrence Batley Seniors League.
Oldham, who have four teams of two entered, stride out on the fairways around Huddersfield, Halifax, Bradford and Leeds.
Married to Christine, he has two children, Paul and Michelle, and three grandchildren.
