RUGBY:
OLDHAM St Anne’s ‘A’ secured their third win of the season in Division Two of the North-West Men’s League with a hard-earned 26-22 triumph over Woolston.
Saints dominated the opening quarter with tries from man-of-the-match Brad Turner, Oliver Bryan and Matthew Whitehead, who also kicked two goals for a 16-0 lead.
Woolston then spotted a gap out wide, which allowed winger Sam Vernon to touch down, but Saints captain Bryan replied with a 30-yard dash to the line, before Vernon squeezed over in the corner for his second try.
The visitors had their best spell in the third quarter — centre Mark Forster led the way — as tries from Ian Ward, Vernon again, and Jack Holt levelled things up at 20-20.
Jay Rutter then converted from the touchline to put Woolston ahead.
But in a tense final quarter, it was Saints who managed to secure the win with a well-worked Callum Cashin try and a Whitehead conversion.
