Reigning champions hold their nerve

GOLF: DEFENDING champions Ashton ‘A’ got their new East Division season off to a flying start with a 7-1 home win over Brookdale.
But it was a tight affair for Andy Lomas’ men as two of the games went to the final hole and the other two to the 17th. It was a double success for Ashton as their ‘B’ team claimed a much-prized away win — 5-3 in the reverse fixture.
In the West Division, which had a two-week jump start due to extra fixtures, North Manchester lead the way, where there was a first win for new club Werneth Low as they edged Dukinfield 5-3.
Stamford have made an unbeaten start to lead the West section of the ‘B’ League — the latest a fine 7-1 home win over reigning champions Blackley.
Last week’s games at Blackley, Werneth, Saddleworth and Castle Hawk were cancelled because of the weather.
GARETH White and Adrian Reece retained the Commemorative Cup — the first major of the year at Ashton. A sparkling front nine of 31, including six consecutive birdies, was followed by an identical score coming back for a nett 62.
They finished one shot ahead of Nick and Chris Richardson, who scored 63.
SUE Oldham, with a round of 75-6-69, beat Eileen Fallon (89-20-69) on a card play-off to claim the second Lady Captain’s qualifier at BLACKLEY. Debbie Barber (96-24-72) was third.
