Relief for Rangers after last-gasp win
Date published: 14 July 2015
SADDLEWORTH Rangers threw the form book out of the window as they secured their first Kingstone Press National Conference League Division
One win of the season in style.
Few gave rock-bottom Rangers much hope as they travelled to promotion hopefuls Ince Rose Bridge, but Craig Farrimond’s men returned home with a stunning 27-24 victory.
Rangers recovered from 12-0 down midway through the first period to lead 23-12 early in the second.
The visitors then found themselves a point behind as the game entered the closing seconds, but a last-gasp try from hat-trick hero Adam Jeffries completed a memorable win.
Sam Shaw and Dave Newton had also crossed for Rangers, with Ben Whitehead adding three conversions and a field goal.
Connor Matthews scored twice for Rose Bridge, while Tony Baker and Jamie Malone also registered.
Kenny Baker (three) and Rob Valentine added conversions.
The two points gleaned lifted Rangers off the foot of the table at Wigan St Judes’ expense.
OLDHAM St Anne’s went down 30-12 at Stanley Rangers in Division Two.
John Deakin and Brad Quinlan scored Saints’ tries, with Kiel Lancashire adding the conversions.
Despite the defeat, coach Mick Worrall was happy with his team’s efforts.
Saints’ James Shaw was the pick of the bunch, with Matt Whitehead also performing well.
Saints now look forward to four straight home games during the coming weeks, when hopefully they can improve on their poor league status.
The Higginshaw Road side have won only once so far this term and currently prop up the table.
