RUGBY:
WATERHEAD Warriors have finally eased themselves out of the National Conference League Division Three’s bottom two thanks to a thrilling victory at fellow strugglers Wibsey.
Dave Orwell’s battlers had to fend off an incredible second-half fightback from Wibsey despite seemingly cruising to victory with a 30 points to four lead at half-time. Amazingly, with only three minutes left they found themselves 44-36 adrift and snatched a dramatic 46-44 victory.
Luke Dufeu and Declan Slicker bagged the late tries that finally turned the match Waterhead’s way, with Liam Aspin improving the first score to wrap up a seven-goal tally.
SADDLEWORTH Rangers suffered a difficult day, beaten 40-12 at the home of Division One’s basement side, Wigan St Jude’s.
St Jude’s are now level on points with second-bottom Rangers in the table following a match in which little went right for the visitors.
Matthew Bottom and Gavin Dodd grabbed the tries for Rangers, with Ben Whitehead converting both.
