JON “Two-Smokes” Kays has admitted he’s in the “last-chance saloon” as he gears up for his big European title shot at the Manchester Arena on October 10.
Kays, a big Oldham favourite will take on much younger hopeful Adrian Gonzalez for the WBO super- featherweight strap, in what is sure to be a cracking local derby between two Ashton-under-Lyne-based rivals.
Many punters are predicting a routine win for 24-year-old Gonzalez, who has won 11 out of 12 pro fights. But Kays, who has only lost four times in 26 fights, is determined to upset the applecart as he heads towards the twilight in his career.
“Getting this European title shot has given me a real spring in my step and I don’t intend to let the chance go,” he said.
“I’m flying in training now. I’ve still been working during the day for now, but then I’ve been grafting hard in the gym and everything is coming together nicely. “I am in the last chance saloon now. I’m 32 and this is possibly my last big shot. If I beat Gonzalez though, lots more doors could open up.”
