Tonge ease off the gas

BOWLS: RECENTLY-crowned Manchester Premier League champions Tonge suffered a rare defeat when they went down 8-7.5 (176-174) at the King and Queen, Warrington.
Tonge winners were Stephen Leach (21-9), Steve Squire (21-13), Nigel Greenhalgh (21-14), Thomas Dobson (21-16) and Jimmy Derby (21-19). Tonge’s final fixture of the season is on Wednesday, September 2, at South Manchester RBL. They have an open date next week.
SPRINGBANK’S Paul Heap takes on Walkden’s Darren Porter in the first round of the Your Choice men’s singles at Norden BC on Sunday. Start time is 6pm.
PAUL Leah, Dean Ferris, Callum Wraight and Chris Mordue were the first four finals-day qualifiers in the Tonge Classic on Thursday night. Heats continue tonight (7pm), when local bowlers John Ashton and Paul Heap are among the players in action.
