Ashton tick off first half of double

GOLF: ASHTON ‘B’ have claimed the first half of the double by winning the ‘B’ Cup in extra-time.
Their match with Brookdale ‘B’ at Denton had been locked at 2-2 with the final match reaching the 15th green when bad light stopped play. They returned last Friday and with Alan Newell and Martin Wild two up with three to play, they took the two halves they needed for a 2&1 success.
It proved a good week for Danny Andrews’ charges, as Ashton ‘B’ also marched into the final of the league play-off with a whitewash win at home to Oldham.
The East Division top club won nine of its 10 regular season games and continued that form against an Oldham side that had claimed second place in the competitive West Division.
But early 8&7 and 5&4 wins put Ashton in control and they shut out the tie with ease.
A packed fixture list at local clubs sees the other play-off games sprinkled through September.
In the ‘A’ Section, Werneth will play host to Stamford on September 5, while Blackley play Denton two weeks later.
In the ‘B’ Section, Stamford meet Fairfield on September 26 and the winners face Ashton ‘B’ in the final at a neutral venue.
THE league’s end of season tournament for the Brian Atack Trophy will take place on September 27 at Crompton and Royton.
