REARGUARD ACTION . . . Ian Dronsfield on his way to a brave 46 against Crompton on Sunday.
CRICKET: WERNETH skipper Ian Dronsfield has rallied his troops as the Lake Garage CLL season enters its final furlong.
Second from bottom of the Championship with four games to go, Werneth have endured a tough campaign.
Following the loss of all-rounders Matt and Joe Taylor, and pro Mohammed Zaman Khan to Littleborough, it was always going to be a tough test for the Coppice team. But Dronsfield says his side will try to put inconsistent displays behind them.
Werneth is the only team to have beaten title winners Crompton in the league this summer. “It’s funny, but we have played our best cricket against the top teams such as Crompton and Middleton,” said Dronsfield. “Our batting hasn’t been good enough. We keep being reduced to 20 for three or four and if we are then bowled out for 100 we aren’t going to win many games.
“We will keep going until the end of the season, but our plans for next year are on hold while it is decided if the Pennine League is going to be an open league.”
