GARY Ellis remained on course for a record sixth Waterloo Handicap title after edging out his close friend Paul Dudley 21-20 in the last 32.
The Nimble Nook and Tonge star displayed all his noted survival instincts in the best match of the round.
Ellis faced another tough challenge today against Kendal’s Ian Nicholson. The winner takes his place in finals’ day in Blackpool tomorrow.
