Saddleworth captains retain grip on trophy

SADDLEWORTH came from four shots back to beat Crompton and Royton and claim their fourth successive Oldham and District Captains’ weekend PVC Trophy in Grantham.
A day-high score of 43 by captain Charles Nicholson and past captain Andy Dunster was the decisive move on day two on the Woodside course. And with vice-captain Ken Barnes and president John Moon also winning their match with 35 points, Saddleworth romped to a 10-point winning margin.
Lewis Marland, a past captain at Brookdale, saw his Team Belfry take the 12-a-side Charity Cup 6.5-5.5 in a Ryder Cup format. Stuart Whittle holed the winning putt in the last match on the last green as he and Gary Simpson won both their matches, a feat emulated by team-mates Mark Abbott and Joe Loughman.
In the eight years of the event, Saddleworth have claimed the main prize five times.
