FOOTBALL: JERMAINE Steele bagged his second hat-trick of the season as Limeside King George displayed their title credentials with a convincing victory over Coppice United in the Jack Abbott Premier Division of the Oldham Sunday League.
George got their act together after a nervy start which saw United’s Navid Butt fail to hit the target from the penalty spot.
There was praise for Steele, too, from George manager Warren Berry, who said: “Mainie took his goals well and deserved his hat-trick, but his all-round performance was very good.
“We made a slow start to this one, but we came good in the end.”
The spot-kick was awarded to United in the seventh minute when Muzaffar Ali went down in the box following a collision with George goalkeeper Michael Henry. United failed to take advantage as Butt dragged his spot-kick wide.
It was delightful stuff from United up to that point, but Steele showed his mettle with a smartly-taken treble, which included one from the penalty spot to show the unfortunate Butt how it’s done.
United grabbed a consolation goal through Tufail Baloch, but not before goals from Andrew Stafford and Grant Marshall had underlined George’s superiority.
