Heyside on high after upset
Date published: 26 June 2008
RAIN decimated the latest round of fixtures in the under-17s division of the Saddleworth and District Cricket League.
But Heyside created a shock in a rearranged Romida Trophy first-round tie.
They defeated table-topping Greenfield by seven runs at Ladhill Lane.
Heyside accumulated 140 for eight, with Adam Hayes taking four for 24.
Because Josh Higgins and Dominic Gill were unavailable, first-team wicketkeeper Chris Gill offered his services as a bowler and claimed three for 28.
Chris later retired on 53 as Greenfield fell just short of their target.
Meanwhile, Luke Ellis claimed a three-wicket haul as Austerlands overcame mid-table rivals Heyside in the under-13s section.
The young bowler finished with excellent figures of three for 14 in the home side’s score of 120 all out.
Matthew Toop and Jack Warburton, who retired on 35 and 31 respectively, were the chief contributors to Heyside’s total.
Austerlands reached their target with an over to spare, David Percival and Oliver Monahan retiring on 30 apiece.
Shaw, the leaders, had a four-wicket win over Uppermill, while Saddleworth ‘A’ maintained their challenge thanks to a seven-wicket defeat of Droylsden.
For the ‘A’ team, Richard Hunsley retired on 31 and Edward Crowther took two.
Arkam Zeer’s knock of 20 for Glodwick was to no avail as they were swept aside by Saddleworth ‘B’.
Bamford Fieldhouse, in joint second, were comfortable winners over Hollinwood, but the Royton versus Moorside match was called off because of an unfit pitch.
Scores are —
Heyside 120, Austerlands 121-3; Droylsden 79, Saddleworth ‘A’ 82-3; Uppermill 39, Shaw 40-6; Bamford Fieldhouse 22-0, Hollinwood 21; Saddleworth 71-1, Glodwick 69-9.; Royton v Moorside — abandoned, unfit pitch.
OLDHAM Schools under-15s were setting their sights on a third Lancashire Schools’ Merit League win of the season when they faced Trafford today.
The two teams have experienced mixed fortunes with two victories and two defeats.
They got under way with a 75-run reverse against Salford, but bounced back to beat Manchester by five wickets.
A 23-run win against Bolton soon followed before they slumped to a seven-wicket reverse at the hands of Salford at the beginning of the month.
GREENFIELD under-15s were left to count the cost of conceding 44 extras as they bowed out at the semi-final stage of the Lancashire County League Cup.
They allowed Denton West to reach 109 for seven. Josh Lees took three for 12.
Despite Liam Parfitt and Toby Jones both retiring on 30, Greenfield were limited to 96 for two in reply.
They reached the last-four courtesy of a six-wicket win over Roe Green, who were restricted to 108 for five.
Josh Higgins (two for 14), Harry Wallace (two for 14), Joe Hepworth (retired on 42) and Will Miles (31) were the chief contributors for Greenfield.
Ollie Higgins struck 21 off his four overs — he was out once — as the under-11s edged out local rivals Saddleworth by four runs in the Tameside and District Junior League.
Greenfield finished 266 (91 runs for the loss of five wickets), while Saddleworth scored 262 (77 runs with three wickets down).
